At a recent Council meeting it was suggested that the Hobart City Council investigate the legalities and customer implications of vehicle clamping in respect of unpaid parking fines on vehicles owned by repeat offenders.
The suggestion was: that on discovering a vehicle with multiple outstanding fines (overdue fines and where the owner has avoided prosecution through a number of means)parked in a public street, the Council clamp the wheel of the vehicle and hold it until the fines are paid by the owner.
I am aware that this practice occurs in the US, however I am unsure whether it happens in Australia.
If you have any information on this subject I would appreciate a response, as it will assist me in compiling a report to my Council on the matter.
